AT Bat Logo
I’ve written before about my love for collage artist Winston Smith, perhaps best known for his album art for Dead Kennedys and other bands associated with the Alternative Tentacles label. In the weeks after Helene ripped up my town, Smith’s studio put out a call for tributes to the bat logo he designed many years ago for the label:
I made a collage tribute and sent it in, and to my delight it has been included in a show of Smith’s work and tributes from other artists doing their own interpretations of the the logo at his studio in San Francisco, Studio Fallout. Here’s my tribute to the logo:
There’s a video from the opening reception, and you can see my collage on the wall along with other versions. I’m on the roster of “bat friends” too. It’s really delightful to me to be a small part of a tribute to Smith, who is pretty much the reason I started making collages in high school.
Also, speaking of collages, this Saturday the 21st, I’ll be at the Grey Eagle from 10:00-2:00 selling records and collages. I was part of the art market last week, and it was my first time doing something like that, other than the mall pop-up shop over the summer. It was really fun to talk to people about the music and art, and I appreciated the chance to watch people flip through the hundreds of collages and react in a whole myriad of ways—from laughter to comments on how the images are unsettling. (I totally understand both those reactions, btw!) So if you’re around on Saturday, come by and say “hi”! It was also fun to assemble all the material and create a display that allowed people to interact with the material. Here’s a pic from last week. I’m making some tweaks for this coming Saturday.
